L01: Putting it All Together

http://hotsportconversation.blogspot.com/

The prophet has recently asked us to read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year. 2 Nephi 4:15 reads, “For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.” This scripture mentions three things we must do, we must have the delight to read, we must ponder as we read and write or take notes as we read the scriptures which I believe is in connection with what we have studied. The Scripture Study Skills. We are asked to study the scriptures. We are asked to actively search the scriptures looking for doctrines, topics, themes, answers to questions, etc. and apply the skill to find additional insights from those we are already familiar with.

Developing the habit of daily scripture study must start now as we have been admonished by the prophet to start reading the scriptures now. The Joy of studying the scriptures brings encouragement, direction, comfort, strength, and answers to our needs. The prophet Joseph Smith found the solution to his problem in the Bible by reading and pondering that passage. (see James 1:5) and he said, “Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine.” He pondered on that scripture passage many times. (JS—H 1:12).

Becoming Self-Reliant

This week’s reading summary is all about us becoming self-reliant which has been defined by the church as “the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family”. President Thomas S. Monson has counseled, “Self-reliance is an essential element in our spiritual as well as our temporal well-being”.

D&C 104:15. “And it is my purpose to provide for my saints, for all things are mine” It is an approach to life that can help us become more independent in life and not dependent on others. Developing a strong sense of self-reliance is crucial to our survival.

In a response to a specific reading, video, or activity from the week’s content, what did spark my interest is Elder M. Russell Ballard’s talk on becoming Self-Reliant—spiritually and physically, he emphasis on work “To become self-reliant, a person must work. Work is physical, mental, or spiritual effort. It is a basic source of happiness, self-worth, and prosperity. Through work, people accomplish many good things in their lives. …“As people become self-reliant, they are better prepared to endure adversities” and are “better able to care for others in need”. As we work towards becoming self-reliant we are better prepared to endure adversities and are better able to care for others in need.

In reflecting on my own goals as I have studied social innovation and the gospel, I rely on Professor Yunus admonition “All human beings are creative beings, each human being has great potential buried in him or her”. This has become an eye opener in me to bring out this potential and be creative as I have started in my own small way a social business that will be caring for the abandoned aged living in my community and in future extend it to other communities.

Week 12 Journal

The weeks topics studied suggest self-reliance “which is the ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family”
To Professor Yunus credit plays an important role in the lives of poor people and therefore he suggest that credit should be accepted as a human right. Credit opens up the locked in potential of human beings. The purpose of this week readings are to help us become better able to serve the Lord and care for others. Opportunity is what we all needed.
In sharing a response to a specific reading, video, or activity in this week’s content, what did spark my interest is some of Yunus statements that all human beings are creative beings each human being has great potential buried in him or her. We all have not paid attention to this creative aspect of human beings. All human beings are endowed with unlimited potential, because of barriers created by our societies, individual people never get the full opportunity to bring out their potential. An individual’s social consciousness and the urge to do good things for people on this planet can be as burning and even a more burning desire than personal gain.
In reflecting on my own personal development as regards to self-reliance, everything is being done possible with the help of my Father in Heaven to be self-reliant. The first is seeking education as I am doing, and doing my possible best to expand my business which I have started and be obedient to the Lords commandments.
